PLACES TO VISIT

Looking for something to do in the area?

Take a look at some places to visit or activities to do near Podere Conti, covering:

SEASIDE

CINQUE TERRE
Distance from Podere Conti: 45 min direction La Spezia

Cinque Terre is made up of the 5 fishing villages, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore and the 18km of coastal walks along the old mule-tracks between them, the most famous of which is the Via dell’Amore (Walk of Love).

It is very difficult to find parking in any of the Cinque Terre and is therefore recommended to visit by train and/or ferry.  During the summer months there are normally direct trains from Pontremoli station at about 9:00.  Otherwise there is a large multi-storey car park at La Spezia central station (30 min drive - trains every 15 minutes) which also houses a tourist office to get the latest information on whether any of the walks are closed.

PORTO VENERE
Distance from Podere Conti: 40 min drive direction La Spezia

Just south of Cinque Terre  and jointly designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Porto Venere is believed to date back to the middle of the 1st century BC and named after a temple to the goddess Venus which was sited on the promontory where the church of Peter the Apostle now stands.

Easy car parking except in high season and ferries to the Cinque Terre.  Good clean sea swimming from rocky Byron’s Bay or visit one of the islands Palmaria, Tino or Tinetto by ferry.

LERICI

Distance from Podere Conti: 30 min drive direction La Spezia or Sarzana

Part of the Italian Riviera situated on the Gulf of La Spezia otherwise known as Gulf of the Poets as was the home of Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley (who drowned there) who hosted Lord Byron (famous for his long swim across the Gulf).

Lerici has a long public beach and attractive promenade.  In high season only residents can drive into Lerici but there is a large public car park near the public beach where you can walk the “Lungomare” into the town.

TELLARO/FIASCHERINO
Distance from Podere Conti: 40 min drive direction Sarzana

Named as one of the top 100 most beautiful hamlets in Italy, Tellaro is just south of Lerici and together with its neighbouring village Fiascherino are just as beautiful, albeit less touristy, than the Cinque Terre.

VIAREGGIO
Distance from Podere Conti: 45 min drive direction Pisa

In addition to being known as a seaside tourist town, Viareggio is famous for its Carnival every Saturday in February and the first Saturday of March and the Pucini Festival during July and August.

OUTDOORS

TREKKING/WALKS
Enjoy on of the various routes directly from the Podere:

EASY

45 mins – 1 hr round trip

To the church of San Giovanni Battista, Dobbiana
Take the road over the little bridge next to the swimming pool field, behind the ruins of the Calzare (the landlords house – please do not enter as unstable!) and up the hill past the maritime Pine, joining the main road by the ruins of Casa Corve (or known locally as La Fontana for the water spring located just above it).

Head left on the main road to the church.  When returning walk past the entrance down to the Calzare until you arrive in the hamlet of Macerie where you can walk down to the entrance of the Podere.

MODERATE

1½ - 2 hrs round trip

Following the CAI route to Arnuzzolo
Follow the red & white painted signs from the corner of the swimming pool field down to the bottom right hand corner of the large fields under the property.

The path will take you down a steep mule track until you cross a bridge, pass an abandoned car and arrive in the hamlet of Arnuzzolo where you can take the road up the hill turning right at the top to arrive at the church of San Giovanni Battista and back to the property via Macerie.

Alternatively, you can follow the CAI track as far as Ceretoli or Arzengio where you can find the road that takes you down to Pontremoli.

MODERATE

(variable)

Following the CAI route to Serravalle and beyond
Follow the red and white painted signs out through the main entrance of the property, through the hamlet of Macerie and on to Serravalle and beyond.  From Serravalle you can either go up to visit Rocca Sigillina or Cavallana or down to Caprio.

MODERATE

(4 hrs +)

Prati di Lorgarghena
Follow the same route as above to the church of San Giovanni Battista.  Once passed the church heading for Tarasco and just after there is a turning on the road to head down the mountain, you will see an old mule track heading up the mountain to your right.  Follow this track as it winds past bee hives and streams up to the Prati di Lorgarhena, the prairies at c.800m above see level (i.e. a climb of c. 350m which takes about 2 hours one way).

From the Prati there are numerous treks into the Apennine Tuscan Emilian National Park (as at reception for Maps).  Alternatively, one can drive to the Prati di Lorgarghena by turning left out of the Podere drive, right at the hamlet of Macerie and a sharp u-bend left on the crest of the hill before Serravalle following the brown indications. You will have arrived more or less where the asphalt finishes but if you’re not worried about your car, keep driving at least to where you see an old bath on your right just before a fork in the road where you will see spectacular views of three different mountain ranges.

The Prati di Lorgarghena hosts a festival (Festa della Giunchiglia) dedicated to a rare, almost extinct, wild white daffodil on the second Sunday of May each year.  Enjoy picnics and kite flying in fields turned white with daffodils.

MODERATE TO DIFFICULT

Please see Apennine Tuscan Emilian National Park for seasonal itineraries or contact:
FARFALLE IN CAMMINO  for trekking guides.

RIVER SWIMMING Bagone
